Lenten Study and Compline

On four Thursday evenings this Lent, St. Anne’s will offer a simple, reflective rhythm of study and prayer: a brief book discussion followed by Compline by Candlelight.

We will begin at 6:00 pm with a 45-minute conversation on Being Christian by Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury.

In this widely read and accessible book, Williams reflects on the basic practices of Christian life. Baptism, Eucharist, Scripture, and prayer. He connects these practices not only to personal faith, but to how Christians live faithfully in the world. The book has become a modern classic because it speaks clearly to a time marked by anxiety, division, and injustice, asking how the Church can be rooted in Christ while engaging honestly with current events and social realities.

At 7:00 pm, we will move into the church for Compline, the Church’s ancient nighttime prayer. Compline developed in early monastic communities as the final prayer of the day, offering psalms, brief readings, prayers, and silence as we commend ourselves to God’s care before rest. The service will be held by candlelight, with the altar and nave softly illuminated, creating a quiet and contemplative space. There is no sermon, and the liturgy is intentionally simple.

You are welcome to attend the book discussion, the service of Compline, or both.
